Over ten years creating work across editorial, commercial and cultural spaces, Declan Kelly has built his approach to photography around portraiture, music, fashion and subcultures. Kelly's collaborative practice centres around communities that connect to his own experiences, giving him access and empathy inherent to being an insider and allowing for the creation of intimate portraits.
His portraiture acts as a conversation between himself and the sitter, searching for where personality, performance and identity converge, as a way of discovering the space between self-presentation and being seen.
Kelly often holds events and exhibitions and creates publications, providing opportunities to give back to communities he has worked with, and to create new ones as well; showcasing his belief in the physicality of photography and its ability to bring people together.
Today, Kelly continues to develop a practice led by curiosity, learning about new communities and subcultures from his home in London while broadening his own experiences. Alongside his personal work, he has worked with a range of brands, publications and cultural organisations, including Clash, Crotch, Gay Times, Glamour, the Irish Independent and Wonderland.
